RING FINGER SIZE GUIDE

The Perfect Fit

A ring should sit like it was made for you — because with the right measurement, it was. Here's every method Gallagher's jewellers use to get it exactly right, at home or in-studio.

Our Fit Promise

Fingers change size with the weather, the time of day, and even a long flight — so we measure a little differently. Every method below is one our own jewellers use on the bench, translated for the kitchen table.

THREE WAYS TO MEASURE

Choose What Fits Your
Moment

Whether you're planning a proposal in secret or sizing your own hand at the kitchen table, one of these will get you within a fraction of a millimetre.

Method one

Borrow An Existing Ring

The most discreet route for a surprise proposal. Take a ring your partner already wears on the correct finger — engagement rings sit on the left hand — and measure its inner diameter.

  • Choose a ring worn on the same hand and finger you're sizing for.
  • Lay it flat and measure the inside edge to edge, in millimetres.
  • Match that number to the diameter column on our size chart below.

Method two

The String And Thread Trick

No ring to borrow? Wrap a strip of string, ribbon, or paper snugly around the base of the finger. Mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler.

  • Measure at the end of the day, when fingers are at their largest.
  • Wrap snug but not tight — you should be able to slide it off.
  • The length in millimetres is your circumference; use the chart to convert.

Method three

Book An In-Studio Fitting

For the most precise result — especially for eternity bands and wider settings — our jewellers use a graduated mandrel to size in person, accounting for knuckle width and band thickness.

  • Fittings take fifteen minutes, no appointment required.
  • We size for wider bands slightly differently — ask your jeweller why.
  • Free resizing within 60 days of purchase, once per ring.

GET IT RIGHT

Five Things That Change Your
Size

01

time of day

Fingers swell slightly through the day. Measure in the evening for the truest fit.

02

temperature

Cold hands measure smaller. Warm up with water before taking a reading.

03

dominant hand

Your dominant hand's fingers often run half a size larger than the other.

04

band width

Wider bands feel tighter — size up half a size for anything over 6mm.

05

knuckle vs. base

The ring must clear your knuckle, so measure both and size for the larger.
